Abortion is controversial. This is not something that truly needs to be said or explained, but is an accepted fact in today’s society. This is why one of the largest issues pro-life, pro-defunding Planned Parenthood people have with the organization. They claim that, for their moral standings, they want to defund Planned Parenthood primarily based on the fact that they provide safe, legal abortions. By shutting down the organization, they are attempting to limit abortions, but this is completely contradictory way of reducing abortions.
The pro-life party has repeatedly claimed they want to defund Planned Parenthood because of the abortion services they provide, and yet studies have shown this would not lower the rate. By defunding the organization, women would be forced to undergo unsafe, illegal, and wildly expensive abortions, rather than receiving a safe one at a Planned Parenthood clinic. An example of this comes from a Slate article claiming “Planned Parenthood is the world’s leading provider of birth control…by undercutting this work, Republicans are threatening to cause an increase in the number of unintended pregnancies. And that, in turn, would lead to more abortions.”
Logically speaking, by defunding an organization that provides services that prevent over 579,000 unintended pregnancies every single year, the amount of abortions could not decrease. Rather, women would seek unsafe alternatives or perform the procedure themselves, leading to life-threatening issues. By defunding the largest abortion-provider in the nation, women would not only be able to prevent their pregnancies on the same scale, but would also not be equipped to deal with the unintended pregnancies that happen.
The line of thinking that defunding the organization would lessen abortions (reported, professionally performed abortions, only) is contradictory also in numbers. A 2013 study by the organization showed that “Planned Parenthood provided 3,500,000 contraceptive services and 327,000 abortions. That’s a ratio of more than 10 to 1″. Although statistically Planned Parenthood would be performing less (zero) abortions, the abortion rate would not decrease because of the now absent safe sex services the organization provides.
Women who receive abortions do so because their pregnancy is unintended and unwanted, leaving them with no alternative that would financially, mentally, and physically work for them aside from abortion. Defunding Planned Parenthood would strip women of their access to pregnancy preventative measures, leading to an increase in abortions, the opposite of what pro-life “de-funders” are working for.
